BYU On-Campus Spring/Summer
OPEN FOR 2020
Location:
Brigham Young University, Provo, Ut
Time Frame of Internship:
2020 Spring/Summer term | April 27 - August 7, 2020
Description:
On-campus fellows gain valuable mentored experience as they work in research labs full-time over spring and summer terms. The fellowship sharpens their focus on future careers in cancer research, strengthens their applications to graduate and health professional schools, and advances their training in pursuit of careers.
- Fellows receive a stipend of $13.50 an hour for up to 15 weeks of full time research (40 hours a week).
- The SCCR staff regularly host potential donors on tours. Fellows should be willing to meet with donors touring the facilities and describe the work they are doing. Fellows will receive brief training and orientation in preparation to meet in their labs with tour guests.
- The SCCR Summer Fellowship is intended to be a full-time job. Undergraduate students working on time cards must meet productivity expectations of mentors while complying with Affordable Care Act work regulations. Graduate students on contracts are expected to work a minimum of 40 hours a week in line with the productivity expectations of their mentors. In addition to describing anticipated absences, applicants must list all other planned activities (e.g. classes, additional employment, physician shadowing, etc.) which may require time away from their research, and indicate how they will compensate to comply with the time commitment required for the Fellowship.
- Attendance at weekly seminars is mandatory for all Fellows. The listing of anticipated absences should include reference to which, if any seminar(s), they will not be in attendance. If unforeseen circumstances arise which preclude attendance, the Fellow should notify the Program Coordinator prior to the seminar to inform them of those circumstances.
- Must fill out weekly spreadsheet/log to update SCCR on progress.
- All fellows will present during the last week of the fellowship.
- Each fall the SCCR hosts a Donor Appreciation dinner. If invited, you will need to attend and be prepared to present your research. The SCCR will print your poster for you and cover the expense.

Applicants will be evaluated on an individual basis based on their merits by a committee of Simmons Center faculty. Fellows are then selected by the Simmons Center Executive Board. Students should already be participating in a BYU lab working with a mentor.

"The SCCR fellowship enabled me to do so much more with my research than I ever thought possible. Having the ability to work full-time has allowed me to push and expand my research goals, and I hope to produce a publication and potential cancer therapy options for clinical use in the future."
- Kiara Vaden Whitley, 2017 SCCR Summer Fellow
