Each Fellowship is funded by individual donors who are anxious to support cancer research at BYU and believe in the SCCR’s mission, “to provide experience to students that begins the training of the next generation of cancer clinicians and researchers.” Hence, the application should include a letter of appreciation/gratitude to the donors who make the Fellowship Program possible. In this letter you should:

Briefly explain explain what you hope to gain from participating in the program

Indicate your educational or professional plans following completion of the Fellowship.

Describe how successful completion of the proposed research will help to achieve those educational or professional goals.

Expectation of Fellows:
1)  The SCCR Summer Fellowship is intended to be a full-time job, working a minimum of 40 hours per week. In addition to describing anticipated absences, applicants must list all other planned activities (e.g. classes, additional employment, physician shadowing, etc.) which may require time away from their research, and indicate how they will compensate to comply with the time commitment required for the Fellowship.

2) Fellows are required to provide a weekly update. The SCCR Program Coordinator will provide students with a spreadsheet.

3) Fellows are required to give a  10 minute presentation during the last week of the fellowship. The SCCR Program Coordinator will reach out to coordinate times.

4) Each fall the SCCR hosts a Donor Appreciation dinner. If invited, you will need to attend and be prepared to present a poster of your research. The SCCR will print your poster for you and cover the expense.

5) Each spring the SCCR and Cougs Vs Cancer Club host the Cougs Vs Cancer Rex Lee Run. All proceeds from the run help fund the SCCR fellowship program. Please be prepared to volunteer at that event.
Applicant Statement:
To accomplish the principal goal of SCCR Fellowships it is essential that proposals submitted by student applicants be written entirely by the applicants themselves. The application should end with the following statement signed and dated by the applicant:

“I certify that this application is entirely of my own creation and writing. Any assistance from others in its composition has been limited to minor editorial correction.”
